Billy (the Canine) is like his human inspiration Billy the Kid, the 19th Century frontier outlaw of the American Old West, in two important ways: his agility and his incredible instinct.
Close Friend and fellow Regulator Hijinio Salazer said this about Billy the Kid. “When in danger, he was the coolest man I ever saw. He acted like a flash from a gun. He was quick as a kitten and when he aimed his pistol and fired, something dropped.”
Our Billy is a born athlete; quick, lithe as a cat, with powerful drive and an innate drive to work.
Frank Coe, who also rode as a Regulator recalled the following years after the Kid's death, “He had a wonderful presence of mind. The tighter the place the more he showed his cool nerve and quick brain.”
From the get-go Billy has stunned us with his abilities. He swam flat as a beaver the first time he entered the pond at ten weeks, has always retrieved to hand, pointed with insane intensity and took to new cover types like he was born a “Big Dog.” While every now and then he can be rambunctious and play like puppies do, he is the most focused and mature young dog we’ve ever had...and that’s no BS!
His first hunting season has truly been stunning. He works cattails as well as his parents (INT CH, VC Roughneck Shockwave MH and INT CH Sharp Shooters Ladies Man) and his cunning approach to attacking cover is downright scary.
There were nine puppies in this litter and EVERY owner has called us with the exact same reports from their first hunting season and seven have already gotten Prize I’s in Natural Ability. Like “The Kid’s” posse called the Regulators, this litter of mavericks stands out as being unique. Puppies like this may come along once in a lifetime and we are so glad we kept one. Billy truly is priceless!
It was frequently reported that Billy the Kid had a cocky sense of humor. One of our favorite action/western movies is Young Guns, the modern-day story of Billy the Kid. One of the most memorable scenes from the movie was the motivation for our Billy’s registered name. In the movie, just before Billy the Kid was about to shoot his next victim, he would chuckle with a hyena-like laugh and ever-so subtly alert them by saying, “Yoo-hoo, I’ll make you famous.” After that....well the rest is history.
While our gentle version of Billy will certainly never go down in history as a ruthless killer...we dare say his life will be no less than historic.
